Backyard Camping Season Opener

Backyard camping season starts today! Cullen was so excited about camping outside he ran around the tent for a good portion of the evening (he is the blur in the picture below). We kicked off tonight's season opener by running to Dairy Queen before Nick and Cullen headed into the tent for the night. As much as I would love to camp out with them, I am sitting this years opening day out. I need a good night sleep to keep up with this pace I've got going.

Can Life Get Any Better???

I went to school today with a list of everything I needed to get done before we leave. But shortly after starting my day I realized we had received a social report on Geremu- it is 19 pages long with pictures and all kinds of scoop on my little guy, giddy-up! Needless to say I wasn't able to cross much off my list because during my free time I was busy compiling all the pictures into one for your viewing pleasure.

From what I can tell Geremu has Nick's hairline and my sparkling personality!

On a completely different note, I have a temporary roommate living at my house. I told her that I wasn't even going to talk about her on the blog until after I had gone into her bedroom at night and took a few picture of her sleeping to post. It's Katherine (close family friend I grew-up with) she graduated this past December and has been subbing in this area of the state. The lease on her apartment was up last weekend and she wanted to finish the school year subbing. Since she is teaching summer school in Madison she will be moving out shortly. It's been so nice & fun having her around!

I've been really busy these past few days, next week is the last week of school for us and I won't be there so I have a lot of extra (sub and grading) stuff I need to take care of before we leave. I really should be working on something else right now- I'd best get a move on.

Let the Countdown Begin

I know that I said I would write more about the weekend but I've been a bit tied up lately with everything I have to do. Did I mention that I'm leaving the country a week from tomorrow? Start the countdown people!

So here is a very abbreviated rundown of my weekend. My parents came over to this side of the state Friday-Sunday morning then my cousin Courtney came Sunday-Monday.

Here are some pictures from the last two days of Cullen, seriously could he be any cuter?
When Cullen gets angry about something, like not getting "marmellos" (marshmallows), he now hides out in the kitchen cabinet to get away.
We've been spending a bit of time on Cullen and Geremu's bedroom, Bob aka Cullen has been a huge help. He mostly walks around saying, "yes we can".

Surprise Party

Today Cullen had a splendid idea, he wanted to surprise his Dad with a birthday party. I love a good party and since Nick's birthday is in January I had a pretty good idea he would be surprised. So Cullen made a card and practiced playing his train whistle. When he was done with these activities he wanted to know the status of Dad's cake and candles. Frankly, a cake and candles never crossed my mind. But what's a party without a cake? So I let Cullen help me make brownies. This seemed like a good idea until Cullen got mad because I wouldn't let him break the eggs. When Nick came home from school Cullen ran to hide then yelled, "SURPRISE"! Cullen gave him the birthday card- let me interpret it for you, it says, "march, march, march" (picture below). Then I sang Happy Birthday while Cullen played the train whistle, as you can imagine we compliment each other nicely.

After all that excitment Nick took Cullen outside to play. This was the scene from my kitchen window minutes later.

I'm not sure who's idea this was but Cullen was hiding in his "house" with an unbrella for a partial roof and Nick was spraying the hose like it was raining outside. Cullen ended up a bit wet but he was loving every minute.

Geremu's New Blanket

So today Geremu got a blanket from my good friend Amy, I absolutely LOVE it! She made the blanket and these pictures do not do it justice, it is so nice. As you can probably tell from the pictures one side is the Ethiopian Flag and the other side is the American flag. It is so soft and cuddly, I can't wait to see him covered in it!On a completely different note it was twins day at school. My friend Michelle and me were twins. Michelle is the one on the right and I'm on the left in the picture, I thought I best explain who is who since we look so much alike. Tomorrow isn't twins day but we are going to dress alike again, I'm not so sure people will even notice, seriously.

Birth Certificate

So today we got a birth certificate and updated photo- he looks so much older!

There is a mistake on the birth certificate but assuming that it's fixed and we get state clearance we should be in Ethiopia to pick Geremu up June 5th. Everyone cross your fingers that everything is fixed soon- I hate hanging in limbo. In the mean time we were told to go ahead and put tickets on hold for our flight! This couldn't have come at a more perfect time! Some stats for you folks, since Feb. 21 Geremu has grown 2 inches and gained almost 5 lbs he is now in the 15-20% on the American growth chart.

To Grandmother's House We Go

Yesterday we headed down to visit my grandparents. Below is a picture of Cullen with his Grandma Great C., she is looking really very good these days after everything that she has been through this year. We also got to see Uncle Buck, Kailyn, Uncle Corkey, Aunt Nancy, Callie and Jersey- wish we could have stayed longer, the time always goes so fast when we just do a day visit. My sister Colleen and Mom were also was in town visiting with our grandparents so it was nice to see them. Colleen is done with school for the year and headed to camp this next week, I don't know if we will get a chance to see her this summer so it was nice to spend a little time with her.Below are a few other pictures of our Saturday, Bob S. was supervising as Nick grilled out. A Little Coat

Just wanted to share a quick story, I was cleaning out the entryway closet and Cullen was sitting on the steps talking to me. I found a fleece coat that doesn't fit Cullen anymore but decided to keep it in the closet because it will fit Geremu. After I mentioned to Cullen that Geremu will fit in his old fleece he took off his sweatshirt and put on Geremu's fleece, insisting that it still fits him. Yikes, either Cullen is going to have to learn to let go of his old things or he is going to look pretty darn funny this summer in really small clothes.

Visit from Patrick

Today we had a visit from my cousin Patrick. We sure had a good time seeing him. He also brought along a fellow firefighter that Cullen really seemed to take a liking to. Here are some pictures of our time together. On our way to go out to eat we stopped by what I refer to as the world's largest tether ball.

This is just outside the place we ate at, it was a beautiful day!Cullen loves to race, he talked both Patrick and his friend into racing him around the house. This is Cullen's little jeep that doesn't run because we need a new battery, which is probably a good thing after seeing him try to steer his bike. Cullen still likes to take this for a ride daily and since it doesn't run I am usually the one that ends up pushing him around the yard. Fortunately, today I didn't have to push. Cullen found it pretty funny that he ran over Patrick's foot. After Patrick left he kept telling me, "I go bump and Patrick say ouch" then he would kill himself laughing.

Mother's Day

I had a GREAT Mother's Day today. Shortly after waking-up Nick made breakfast for Cullen and me- yummy. You might want to note from the picture that the Virgin Mary joined us for our meal. Nick told me for Mother's Day that the Jesus statue to match Mary is on mail order.

Besides breakfast I also got my car hosed down from Cullen and an oil change from Nick, some how they knew just what I wanted!

Between the Jesus statue and the oil change I'm sure you are all jealous. Nick was a surprised to learn that Geremu knew our credit card number and had gotten me a little something for Mother's Day. It really didn't surprise me one bit, my new shirt fits perfect!

Happy Mother's Day to all the Mom's that read this blog!

Kisses in the Wind

I was really hoping for Mother's Day I would get a birth certificate, but at this point I know that is not possible. In fact, I received an e-mail from our specialist and it sounds like we might be in for a longer wait then they initially told us. With the drought in Ethiopia the capital city only has about an hour of power a day, making it extremely difficult to print birth certificates and passports. I'm still hoping for the best!

I don't know who wrote this poem but I love it! I also like the song, http://www.adecmusic.com/worship/kisses_in_the_wind.htm

Kisses in the Wind
I hold you in my heart and touch you in my dreams.
You are here each day with me, at least that's how it seems.
I know you wonder where I am... what's taking me so long.
But remember my child, I love you so and God will keep you strong.
May God hold you in His hand until I can be with you.
I promise you, my darling, I'm doing all that I can do.
Very soon, you'll have a family for real, not just pretend.
But for tonight, just as always, I blow you kisses in the wind.
May God wrap you in His arms and hold you very tight.
And let the angels bring the kisses that I send to you each night.
Now go outside and feel the breeze and let it touch your skin...
Because tonight, just as always, I blow you kisses in the wind.

A Big Boy Needs A Big Bed

When I started to re-do Cullen and Geremu's new bedroom we decided it would probably be a good time to move Cullen from his crib to a big boy bed. When we put Cullen's new bed in his room we also put a toddler bed in there for Geremu. Cullen never had a toddler bed but has sort of taken a liking to Geremu's. Once to twice a week he likes to plant his butt in Geremu's bed and sleep there. I have told him many times that it's Geremu's bed and he always responds with, "I just keepin' it warm". Last night he fell out of Geremu's bed and never even woke up. So I just went into his room and covered him up on the ground, I was afraid if I attempted to move him then he would wake up. Anyways, this morning when Nick went to shower he must have woken Cullen because when he got out of the bathroom Cullen had moved himself back into his bed and had fallen back asleep.

Credit Card

That's right folks, I am the proud owner of a credit card! I applied for my first credit card about a week ago and just received it in the mail today. Yeah Me! I'm so excited, what should I buy!!! I haven't activated it yet, I'm going to attempt that after Cullen goes to bed tonight. Hope it all works out!

Weeds

This was the view from my kitchen window today.

Although it may look like Cullen is getting pony rides around the yard from Nick what is actually happening is Nick is picking dandelions (and Cullen is riding along). This may be the craziest of my husbands traits- he doesn't like to use weed killer or anything to fertilize the lawn because it can pollute the earth but he is willing to spend minutes and sometimes hours picking weeds- I'm not kidding.

We live in a neighborhood where everyone has a beautiful lawns. Pretty much everyone uses a lawn service. We have had neighbors give us the number of their lawn service. I've actually called and had them come to our house but when Nick found out they wanted to "treat" the lawn with chemicals that was the end of considering a lawn care service. Apparently he was looking for someone that was willing to pick all the weeds and dandelions on their hands and knees for a small fee.

I'm sorry to admit I use to help him with his obsession before we had kids. I'm the one that initially purchased the "weed puller". But after pulling both of my hamstrings doing this I called it quits. Nick has improved his technique by crawling around the yard to prevent such injuries from happening to him. I don't think he liked the way I was pulling the weeds either because he would sometimes mention that I didn't get the root- again I'm not kidding.

On a completely different topic Nick and Cullen were outside washing out the fish bowl and Cullen dropped the bowl on the driveway. Thankfully Nemo wasn't in his bowl, Nemo now has a new home.

The Swing Set

Cullen got a new swing set this past weekend from my parents neighbors. This has offered plenty of entertainment this past week. Today Cullen had some of his friends over to share his swing set with (my friend Michelle's children). You can see just how much fun they had with us by their smiles!
I'm kidding, we did have a really good time and all the kids were tuckered out a little early then usual!
